Explore an Holistic Approach to Feeling Calm and Balanced

Our response to stress is often impacted by the state of our nervous system, the level of tension or pain held within the body, and other underlying symptoms that can alter our sense of wellbeing, resilience, and ability to adapt to stress.

Treating acute, chronic or traumatic stress can often need a holistic approach, treating your symptoms, calming your nervous system and building your interoceptive awareness to create systemic change.

Our team at MACHI Health knows our way around acute, chronic and traumatic stress conditions, it is our primary focus and the work we do alongside government and privately funded programs to support victims and survivours of crime.

We’re here to work alongside you and your chosen healthcare team, providing a relaxing and supportive space to explore your experience of stress. Using therapies such as acupuncture and cupping, we aim to reduce physical tension, calm your nervous system, and help you feel more balanced and grounded.

Where appropriate, we will provide practical tools to help manage stress and tension alongside Chinese herbal medicine, which can help support symptoms associated with your stress, e.g gut irritation and insomnia outside of the clinic

Can Acupuncture Help with Stress?

Your acupuncture sessions are aimed at treating your experience holistically,

Acupuncture is aimed to help your body find regulation; increasing heart rate variability and reducing your resting heart rate, which are associated with our body moving into healthy parasympathetic rest.

Your parasympathetic nervous system is associated with our body's ability to come back to a healthy state of rest, increased digestive activity and tissue healing. It is also related to a ventral vagal state of safety and social engagement.

Our sessions will always be focused on you as an individual and treatment will be focused on stress reduction and supporting your overall health.

Additionally, acupuncture modulates parasympathetic activity, the branch of the nervous system associated with rest, relaxation, digestion and tissue healing.

Signs Stress May Be Affecting Your Body

When stress is high it isn’t just a state of overwhelm and burnout, we will often see clients who are experiencing:

●       Chronic muscle tension

●       Headaches or migraines

●       TMJ or jaw clenching

●       Digestive issues, like IBS, bloating and nausea

●       Insomnia

●       Fatigue

●       Anxiety and panic attacks

●       Heart palpitations

●       Flaring of skin conditions

How Does Stress Affect Your Health?

When we are under immense stress, our body works in two ways:

Activating your sympathetic nervous system to increase your heart rate, blood pressure, muscle tension, and breathing rate and because it needs to be on high alert, it reduces digestive activity.

It also signals a response to our adrenal glands to release cortisol which helps to increase blood glucose and utilise energy because we need to be active and alert. It reduces some internal non-essential functions and increases alertness.

This happens within seconds because our bodies are an incredibly efficient system. But unfortunately we often stay in these states of heightened sympathetic arousal state instead of living in them short term.

This leads to our body becoming dysregulated, impacting our ability to get to or stay asleep, digestive our food properly, regulate our hormones, relax muscular tension and support our immune system.

How Many Acupuncture Sessions Are Needed for Stress?

Sessions are always dependant on the way in which stress is manifesting for you, but generally:

  • Acute stress; 2-3 sessions, once per week

  • Chronic stress; 3 sessions, once per week and between 3 and 6 sessions fortnightly. Then understanding how much support might be required as we go.

  • Traumatic stress; 3 sessions, once or twice per week, understanding that we take everything very slowly when working with embodied stress. Sessions will move to fortnightly and then monthly.

Our aim is to work with you and get you to a state of regulation that feels sustainable and managed, and sessions then naturally feel like they can drop away and then be picked up when challenging times occur, e.g big deadlines, im
