At MACHI Health, our team of practitioners are here to provide you heart-centred care with Acupuncture, Shiatsu massage and Chinese herbal medicine.

For over a decade, we have been practising in Melbourne’s west, working in conjunction with private and government-funded programs to support clients experiencing acute, chronic and trauma stress. This work has given us extensive experience and understanding of the pervasive impacts of traumatic and modern day stress on our health.

Our team also has a clinical focus on supporting pain conditions, combining acupuncture, heat therapy, cupping, massage and herbal medicine to get the most out of your session. A large majority of our clients attend MACHI seeking support for lower back pain, pelvic pain, neck pain and hip pain.

Given the nature of our work, our approach is individualised, gentle, and informed by both traditional Chinese medicine and modern medicine principles.

What is Chinese herbal medicine?

Chinese herbal medicine ranges from natural products such as varieties of barks, roots, seeds, peels, flowers and so on. It is provided in either raw herbal tea, granule or tincture form based on patient preference.

All herbal products dispensed at MACHI are sourced from Empirical Health and Tianjiang Pharmaceutical because they are based on rigorous quality, purity and potency standards and are independently tested for safety and quality at the highest standard.

Our herbal medicine is ethically sourced and no endangered species are dispensed in our clinic.

How do Chinese herbs help with health problems?

Our aim in the clinic is to understand how your health concerns impact your body, from there we use flavours such as bitter and sweet, and the temperature of herbal medicine, plus their intended action, to create a change to your physiology.

For example, if a patient attends with sinus congestion, our aim would be to understand the root cause of the congestion, and based on that cause we may use herbal medicine that assists to dry phlegm in the nose, warm the blood vessels and also support the digestive system. As there is a relationship to fluid retention your metabolic function, according to Chinese medicine principles.

Every patient is seen as an individual case, understanding your systems and pulse allows us to understand your experience of sinus congestion and how it differs from the next patient to walk in the door with congestion.

Do I need a prescription to take Chinese herbs?

Whilst you may find Chinese herbal medicine formulas now available online, seeing a trained AHPRA registered practitioner ensures that you are receiving the best care for your individual case.

You may often take a formula for 2-4 weeks and once the condition changes, so does the formula. Either modifying the formula in a step down approach, using the same base and removing and adding 1-2 herbs. Or a completely new approach based on your experience.

Standard formulas are also modified based on symptoms or medication you’re taking, ensuring your individual experiences are reflected in the medicine, and understanding that standardized formulas may not be appropriate for your case.
